Dear Dave:

In the early 1970s my family moved next door to you on the shore of Cheney Lake.

You were, first, a friendly neighbor and friend.

When I came to know you better, I grew deeply respectful of your entrepreneurial dedication toward creating an ULU manufacturing business in your garage. There, with the garage door open in summer and on darker and frosty winter afternoons, we had many pleasant conversations — as we endeavored to solve the world's problems.

All this you did on your own time, while teaching.

I soon found that your big heart matched your entrepreneurial nature as you invited students — with particular emphasis on Alaska Native kids — to come to work and learn a trade in the garage with you as you refined the ULU manufacturing process.

And then, there was your lovely family.

Over the years, when I would drive by your Ship Creek store location, I would marvel at your dream that came true. When I gave your ULUs (i.e. never the Chinese knock-offs!) to friends and visitors, your friendship has always been part of the gifting.

You were and are an Alaskan educator, entrepreneur, and business pioneer.

It has been an honor and pleasure knowing you.

…see you around the bend!

Dave
