(Anchorage, AK) – – North Slope Borough Mayor Charlotte Brower (NGP Photo) praised the recent efforts of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee in advancing legislation that would provide up to $50 million to clean up abandoned wells on current or former National Petroleum Reserve. The majority of the funds, provided by the sale of crude helium under the Helium Stewardship Act, are expected to go towards cleanup efforts on the North Slope.

“The North Slope Borough is appreciative of the efforts of Senator Murkowski and the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee to find workable solutions to the legacy well issue,” remarked North Slope Borough Mayor Charlotte E. Brower. “This action stands in stark contrast to recent proposals to strip money away from local communities and the State of Alaska to fix what is ultimately a federal problem.”
