ADN Editorial. Well, this week BP and Conoco Phillips announced what looks like a step away from a gas pipeline by shutting down the Denali project. Denali was a separate operation of the two companies to win shipping commitments for such a pipeline. Denali said they’d invested $165 million in the project, but that shale gas deposits in the Lower 48 and the prospect of continued low prices ruled against any more investment. … The Denali project, launched in 2008, was competing with the AGIA project. Now there’s no competition. There’s no project either.

Greenwire: First new deepwater project in Gulf gets OK
A BHP Billiton deepwater drilling project that gained federal approval yesterday is the first to pass stricter environmental standards following last year’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement signed off on the plan to drill a deepwater exploration well 124 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The Australian company still needs a permit to drill the well.
The Obama administration is an “enemy to production” and is responsible for high gas prices, freshman Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said on Tuesday. “Demand for oil and gas is outstripping supply,” said Paul. “Why don’t we have more supply? Because the current administration is basically an enemy to production, an enemy to drilling, an enemy to all things related to energy.” Paul also blasted Democratic legislation to strip oil companies of $21 billion in tax breaks. He said that effort would lead to even higher gas prices. “Their solution
[to high gas prices] is to raise taxes on oil companies?” asked Paul. “Do you know what taxes are? Taxes are simply a cost. If you run a business and I raise your cost, you will raise your prices.”
