You probably read our Fairbanks News Miner Op-Ed piece yesterday, but did you catch our Alaska Standard Op-Ed — both dealing with different perceptions of tonight’s hearing!

Calgary Herald by Sean Myers.  Calgarians are bracing for higher prices at the pump in the coming weeks, possibly as high as $1.30 a litre by April.

Governor Sean Parnell (NGP Photo) will deliver a major policy address at noon today, National Press Club, Zenger Room, 13th Floor, 529 14th St. N.W. in Washington.  You can bet it will deal with international events affecting Alaska’s energy capabilities in supporting the country’s economic recovery and Alaska’s prosperity!  Readers who can’t attend: stay tuned and we’ll bring you the speech shortly, when it is released.

Comment: Click here to see how the Sierra Club’s ‘Associate Field Organizer’, Lindsey Hajduk, is trying to recruit church goers and Alaska’s kids to go to the BOEMRE hearing tonight and testify against Alaska’s economic survival!

More later…on Commonwealth North’s speakers yesterday addressing Alaska’s major natural resources challenges: Judy Brady, John Shively and Harold Heinze.  The three served different governors as Commissioner of Natural Resources.

Comment: Below is how a Sierra Club "Organizer" is trying to network with Alaska’s kids and churches to develop a greater voice against Alaska’s economic survival.  If you ask me, this Lindsey lady has crossed the line of ‘fair exercise of free speech’ and is venturing into the land of, "I’m just pretending to be an Alaskan for a paycheck without regard to the damage I may do to the future of Alaska."  If we don’t fill the pipeline with oil from federal lands and if the State Senate doesn’t make investment on state lands more competitive, the pipeline will fail in as soon as 4-7 years…and is at risk of closing right now.  If that happens and Alaska reverts to a pre-pipeline population the main group with secure jobs are outside-funded environmental groups like Lindsey’s and federal government employees.  Think carefully before you respond to Lindsey’s siren song.  (Here’s my editorial comment in yesterday’s Alaska Standard, on this subject.)  -dh

Subject: Volunteers needed: Phone Calls Against Offshore Drilling

As the 22nd anniversary approaches for the Exxon-Valdez oil spill (March 24), we’re also headed towards the Gulf Oil Spill’s one year mark (April 20, Earth Day).  It’s obvious we shouldn’t have to suffer any more of these tragedies and common sense beats out any argument to drill in the Arctic.  Right now we have a chance to weigh-in on the future of offshore drilling.

The Federal Government wants to open more of the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas to oil development, and it is holding public hearings to hear from us.  We need to make sure common sense wins at these hearings, and to do that we’ll need a lot of strong comments from our side.

Please help by joining me and others for a phone bank to get folks to the Anchorage hearing.

The Alaska Chapter will be phone banking throughout the week of February 21-24, and your calls will be crucial in the success of this hearing.  Please let me know if you’re interested in volunteering some time.

Who:  Anyone to volunteer
What:  Phone bank
Where:  Sierra Club Alaska, 750 W. 2nd Ave., Suite 100, Anchorage, AK 99501
When:  Monday, February 21 – Thursday, February 24
             2-hour shifts from 3:00PM – 7:00PM (whenever you’re available!)
Why:  To Protect our Coasts from Offshore Drilling!
RSVP: just reply to this email!

Any help you provide is essential!  If phone banking is not your thing we need other help:
· Write a letter to the editor: I can get you some information and talking points to get you ready to go.
· Outreach to other groups: Are you involved in a social club or faith community?  Help spread the word about the hearing to them!
· Day-of the hearing: I’ll need folks to attend early and join a puffin and polar bear (costumes) at the door of the BOEMRE offices!
· Make announcements on campus: if you’re a student, make an announcement to your classroom.
· The list goes on, contact me with suggestions!

Please let me know how you’d like to help!
