RDC Treasurer, Tom Maloney (NGP Photo), opened the conference with a spirited introduction of Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan (NGP Photo-r) who gave more than the usual, mayoral welcome to Anchorage.  (More reports, links, photos coming….)

Alaska’s propensity to spend our children’s future by imposing unreasonable taxes, our irresponsible spending habits, and our overall reluctance to adopt an adult-like fiscal plan are killing prospects for prosperity.  It’s not too late, but it is getting to be too late.
See our NGP report, links and photos on this week’s robust, 30th Anniversary RDC Annual Meeting. Optimism permeated the room but economic warnings were ominous. Alaska is so close to the brink of economic distress that robust meetings like this could be but a memory 10 years from now.

Brad mused below about the future question of "Who Lost Alaska?"  Below, Margy questioned location of Alaska’s business model. Elected leaders who read this type of increasingly common, grass roots comment–and heed–it still have time to moderate our tax policy and adopt a fiscal plan. But it must be done in 2010. If not, improvement might be still possible in 2011 but it will be harder by several billion dollars and a year’s accumulation of lost opportunities and deflected investment decisions. At that point, one could conclude that 30 years worth of poor leadership got us where we are; but the elected leaders of 2009 and beyond are more directly accountable since they 1) knew the past, 2) had sufficient evidence and warning of the perils ahead, and 3) failed to properly act.
