Canada ‘Sweats’ TransCanada’s Valdez Option – Alaska ‘Sweats’ No Gasline

EU News.  UPI.  The oil and gas sector in the Canadian province of Alberta hinges on the outcome of the open season for TransCanada's gas pipeline to the Lower 48 states.  Calgary Herald (Story and map).  In a potential blow to Alberta's petrochemical sector, the proposed Alaska pipeline could bypass the province depending on the outcome of an open season filed Friday by the main sponsors -- Calgary-based TransCanada Corp. and Irving, Texas-based Exxon-Mobil Corp.  KTUU by Rhonda McBride.  "This is all about the shippers," said Bud Fackrell (NGP Photo-right below), [...]

Ruling Could Ruin Mackenzie Project – Adult Attitudes Should Overcome Special Interests on Both Sides of the Border

CBC.  An environmental review panel's recommendation to impose noise limits on any Mackenzie Valley pipeline facilities built inside a bird sanctuary could scuttle the $16.2-billion project, its backers have told the National Energy Board.  Calgary-based Imperial Oil — the leader of the consortium that wants to build the natural gas pipeline — said it and its partners might not be able to conform to the noise restrictions recommended by the panel for facilities built within the Kendall Island Bird Sanctuary. Hill Times, by JEFF DAVIS, CYNTHIA MÜNSTER.  Canada's leading environmentalists say they're [...]

TransCanada and Mackenzie in the news today – Alaska Support Industry Alliance Engages Tax Issue

See the new TransCanada-ExxonMobil Gas Pipeline Webpage and Today's Webcast: 10:30 Alaska Daylight Time CNBC Video.  This morning, Governor Sean Parnell discusses Alaska's conflict with the Federal government over naturalresouces policy...but compliments President Barack Obama's gas pipeline statements.    *     Reuters, by Yereth Rosen (NGP Photo-l) TransCanada Corp <TRP.TO> and partner Exxon Mobil Corp <XOM.N> boosted their cost estimates for a planned line to carry Alaska gas to southern markets by up to 58 percent on Friday, as the two ready plans to sign up shippers for the massive project.  The companies said [...]

Analyzing Gas Pipeline Projects – See Harbour’s Alaska Standard Op-Ed On Environmental Extremism

The Alaska Standard by Dave Harbour: "Not Evil, Just Wrong". Alaska Advocate Blog by Steve Porter (NGP Photo).  When analyzing a specific proposal, and especially when comparing two alternative proposals, the proposed debt/equity ratio and the return on equity are two of the most important factors in comparing the projects.  Some might say that the cost of the pipeline is an important factor, but what one company estimates for the cost of the project versus what another company may estimate for the cost of the project is not really material [...]

Statoil Enters Alaska – Alliance Launches Oil Tax Moderation Program – Not Evil Just Wrong

Not Evil Just Wrong Facebook Page: Be A Friend   Commentary, by Dave Harbour.  The "Not Evil Just Wrong" premiere at the Wendy Williamson auditorium on the University of Alaska-Anchorage campus last night--presented by the Young Republicans Club but also attended by a number of democrats and environmentalists--was a GREAT educational experience.  It addressed several environmental issues of the day in an even-handed way that--in being fair and balanced--will surely inflame those with environmentally extreme agendas.  Every middle school, high school and college student should see it...along with the rest of us.     The documentary [...]

See Alaska Dispatch Feature On Our Digs – Tom Brennan Teaches Tax Economics to State Rep.

The Alaska Dispatch's Josh Saul (NGP Photo coming) came over for an 'interview' and walked away with video footage.  Josh is a long-time Alaskan; with roots deeply entrenched here while waving in the breezes of wanderlust, his branches yearn to touch other places.  He is a traveler, a writer, a videographer, a philosopher-in-the-making and one of the nicest guys you'd want to meet.  During our afternoon together I was reaching a conclusion that his folks had done a great job raising him when he disclosed that they are, indeed, the owner [...]

Governor Challenges Feds – Point Hope and Environmental Extremists Challenge Alaska’s Future – Alaska Dispatch Interviews North Slope Borough Mayor Edward Itta

Governor Sean Parnell's (NGP Photo) State of the State speech last night properly challenged the Federal government for its improper attacks on Alaska's economy.  "Today, however, the federal government’s actions often seem at war with Alaskan interests.  The federal government has misused the Endangered Species Act as a regulatory weapon to delay development of Alaska’s resources. Now, they have proposed setting aside an area larger than the state of California as critical habitat for polar bears. I strongly oppose such overreactive ESA listings and critical habitat designations. These are job killers and [...]

Blogger Numbers

Alaska Dispatch Blog by Jim Behlke.  According to a December 27, 2009 Toronto Star article, the proposed 760-mile Mackenzie Valley Natural Gas Pipeline from northwest Canada's Beaufort Sea coast to Alberta had an estimated cost (in 2003) of as low as C$2 billion. Costs had swollen to C$16.2 billion by 2007, (amounting to about C$21 million per mile) and were "expected to rise further if shovels ever turn the ground." This 30-inch pipeline would only have a third or less of the capacity of an Alaska-to-Alberta pipeline, and it would span [...]

Alaska Oil Taxes – $43 Billion in Canadian Pipelines – Alaskans Note Mackenzie Progress – New Web: Greening of Oil

ADN Opinion.  Some recent gas pipeline news from Canada has Alaskans wondering whether our big North Slope project faces renewed competition from elsewhere in the Arctic. Canada's Mackenzie Valley project has now cleared a half-decade-long review of its environmental and social impacts. The $16 billion project had been stalled by the intensive review. At 1.2 billion cubic feet a day, Mackenzie would be a little more than a quarter the size of Alaska's project, and its gas is scheduled to hit North American markets sooner. Some key companies in Alaska's [...]
