3-10-15 Proud Of Our Newest Senator

Are We Proud Of Alaska's Newest U.S. Senator?  Yes We Are! (We are also delighted with the new, House Natural Resources Chairman, Rob Bishop.  Bishop replaced our longtime hero Chairman Doc Hastings and seems to be effectively and seemlessly moving forward.  More here....  -dh) During his tenure as Alaska's Attorney General Alaska's newest U.S. Senator, Dan Sullivan, brought lawsuits against the federal government for endangering Alaska's constitutionally reliant resource base. Sullivan later served as Commissioner of Natural Resources, continuing Alaska's stand against hostile instances of federal overreaching jurisdiction. As the 49th [...]

3-8-15 Walker’s Wall Of Gasline Opposition

ADN by Paul Jenkins.  "Walker's Wrong Way Pipeline...."  For useful references, see: 3-4-15, Legislators Push Back; 3-2-15, Walker and Legislature Tangle; 2-28-15 Walker Op-Ed; 2-28-15, Jenkins Op-ed re: Crazy as a loon/fox. Gov. Bill Walker now finds himself at loggerheads with lawmakers correctly cranky about his grandiose expansion plans for the $10 billion Alaska Stand Alone Pipeline. His idea is to have ASAP compete with the $65 billion Alaska LNG Project, even though that could ball up the state’s business relationship with producers, who have spent hundreds of millions getting this far, [...]

3-6-15 Oil Investors Continue To Face Federal and State Obstacles

Alaska Journal of Commerce by Tim Bradner.  Just as things seemed to be going reasonably well for the large Alaska LNG Project, the $45 billion to $65 billion gas pipeline and liquefied natural gas initiative in which the state is a partner, Gov. Bill Walker may be throwing a wrench into the works.  More.... Houston Chronicle by Jennifer Dlouhy.  The Obama administration will decide soon whether to sign off on Shell's request for extra time to hunt for oil in Arctic waters, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said Wednesday. Without action, [...]

3-1-15 Governor Bill Walker Wanted To Kill the ASAP Project Before He Wanted to Strengthen And ‘Own’ It. -dh

In Today's ADN, Paul Jenkins opines that:  ... "With a pen stroke, Walker switched the board’s focus from pipeline to politics, with a different outlook and differing goals and needs. "Now, Walker wants to beef up ASAP, the Legislature’s baby, and have it compete with the larger project. ASAP started life in 2010 as a small-diameter, in-state backup to the producer's gigantic Alaska LNG Project to move gas from the North Slope to Nikiski. "ASAP was bumped up to a 36-inch diameter line, but Walker considered it uneconomical -- even [...]

We Are Optimistic That Good Intent Will Win The Day Over Daunting Challenges! A tale of two pipelines and two chief executives: President Barack Obama and Governor Bill Walker by Dave Harbour  (Note: By Friday more links, references and other minor modifications will be added for archive purposes.) We must be optimistic!  After all, who wants to even contemplate the bankruptcy of Alaska or the destruction of America's way of life? So in our Churchillian way, we will never, never, never, give in to pessimism and will fight to the [...]

2-23-15 We continue to wish Alaska’s new governor well, but hope there’s not a screw loose somewhere….

In tomorrow's posting, we'll explain why we struggle with the logic of recent public statements.  -dh Meanwhile, we urge our readers to carefully listen to Governor Bill Walker's words from his news conference last week. Then, we suggest that our discerning readers fill in any blank spaces by absorbing Walker's message in his Saturday, Mat-Su Frontiersman Op-ed piece: From Sunday's Fairbanks News Miner comes this related Op-ed by Senate Resources Committee Chairman, Cathy Giessel (NGP Photo):  See Harold Heinze's 2-21-15 letter to Senator Giessel, here. 1-30-15 NWT Reviews Another Mackenzie Pipeline Option As Financially Strapped Alaska Moves To Purchase A City Utility

Commentary: In conspicuous contrast to President Obama and environmental extremists on both sides of the border, Northwest Territories Premier Bob Mcleod (NGP Photo) joins Alberta Premier Jim Prentice, as a longtime proponent of prudently constructed and managed pipelines.   In fact, McLeod sees pipelines for oil and gas as being one way of increasing the wealth and stature of his people as well as the NWT's economic independence from Ottawa.  See story below.  -dh Toronto Sun by DAVID AKIN, The Northwest Territories announced Thursday it will begin a feasibility study that could [...]

1-29-15 Shell To Explore Chukchi Sea This Summer!

Shell Plans To Explore The Chukchi This Summer! Related Photo Cutline, Journal of Commerce, by Tim Bradner.  Alaska Gasline Development Corp. President Dan Fauske (NGP Photo) said the change in the Alaska Stand Alone Pipeline project to increase the capacity to a 36-inch diameter and use high-strength steel could allow up to 2.6 billion cubic feet per day to be shipped. That improves the economics of the project compared to previous restrictions that limited it to no more than 500 million cubic feet per day.  (Bradner's is one of the most [...]

1-16-15 BP to cut more jobs in response to continuing, low oil prices

Caution:  We would urge our Arctic oriented readers to carefully follow this BSEE Arctic/General OCS Research Plan, for if contracts are given to organizations or professors that are predisposed to be agenda driven, the results may be less than scientific, less than objective.  In short, one hopes we can avoid the situation wherein a Federal Administration sells leases, then does everything in its power to nullify action--at considerable expense to leaseholders and consumers.  -dh   But hold on....  Bradner has an update for this story. Alaska Attorney General Craig Richards ... said [...]

Forbes by Brigham A. McCown.  The recent free-fall of crude oil prices has affected markets across the globe. Energy companies have responded by scaling back investments as their available capital shrinks. In British Columbia, delays are hampering the Pacific Northwest LNG project. Likewise, in Texas, a liquefaction project has been suspended off its coast by Excelerate Energy. Yet, meanwhile, Alaska is moving forward on an ambitious infrastructure project to develop and export its North Slope gas reserves.   The right hand column is undergoing construction and will be visible soon.  -dh

See Our Earlier Commentary: "Is Alaska Beginning A New Year Of Accomplishment or Acrimony?" (Other references) ADN by Dermot Cole.  Gov. Bill Walker (NGP Photo) took a major step toward revising the way the state is dealing with a proposed gas pipeline by removing three members of the Alaska Gasline Development Corp. board and instructing two commissioners not to sign a secrecy pledge proposed by the Parnell administration. (Comment: We do not know enough about all the circumstances to comment on the rightness or wrongness of the Governor's action or legislative reactions.  We do [...]
