OBITUARY HANS CHRISTIAN FLUEHLER 1942 – 2007 On September 18, 2007, Hans Fluehler, beloved husband of Suzanne Brillant, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Hans, a lover of Alaska, from Montreal, co-founded the American Bald Eagle Foundation with his close friend, Dave Olerud of Haines.  With Fluehler’s support and that of Georgia businessman Edward Shirley, Olerud created the Foundation’s office and Bald Eagle diorama in Haines, Alaska.  During this formational period, your publisher served as the volunteer president of the foundation.

Your publisher, founder of People Against State Income Tax (PASIT), following successful repeal of the Alaska personal income tax, made the first large cash contribution to the American Bald Eagle Foundation.  That contribution of PASIT’s surplus funds, accompanied the organization’s dissolution, and exceeded $20,000.

On behalf of the board, your publisher invited former governor, Jay Hammond to join the group which then worked with the University of Alaska-Southeast, to form the American Bald Eagle Research Institute.

Fluehler will be remembered by his children Billie, Alan, Carol and Debbie Willsie, his grandchildren Samantha, Nicolas Willsie, Desiree (Enrique Alfaraz) and Jessica DeWilde and Caitlin Getty; his mother Maria and brother Jakob Fluehler (Vreni David), brothers and sisters-in-law Aubert Brillant (Debby Jamroz), Madeleine Brillant (Claude Humbert) and Louise Casgrain Brillant. Native of Arosa in the Grisons, Switzerland, Hans graduated from the University of Basel and obtained a Master degree in Psychological Education and completed the scholarship requirements of a PhD at the University of Ottawa. In the early stage of his professional career he dedicated himself to the teaching of high performance sports. He was coach and team manager of top athletes and various national teams both in Switzerland and Canada. He trained the Swiss National Ski Jumping Team in Magglingen, Switzerland and contributed to the restructuring of Sports Canada and the Canadian Coaching Association. He was president of the All Canada Sports Inc. one of the leading sports equipment importers-distributors in Canada and later moved on to become a sought after manager and strategic advisor for international business management. He presided over the Federal Liberal Association of Westmount-Ville Marie for over ten years. His commitment, sense of duty and generosity were much appreciated through his involvement in the creation of the American Bald Eagle Foundation, and his membership on the Boards the Canadian Cancer Society, La Fondation des Jeux du Quebec, the Swiss-Canada Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and the Cercle de Cent Associes, and more. In 2002, for his generous services and his sense of duty toward his fellow citizens, his community and Canada, Hans was awarded the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal. Hans leaves behind him wonderful memories to be cherished by his family, friends and colleagues. Suzanne and her children wish to thank all the medical personnel who cared for Hans during his long illness, partiularly his good friend and personal physician Doctor Michel Saine. The family will welcome condolences at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex on Monday, September 24 from 4 to 9 p.m. (1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont (514)279-6540). The celebration of Hans’ life will be held in the Outremont Chapel on Tuesday, September 25 at 11 am. As per Hans’ wishes, donations will be accepted by the Quebec division of the Canadian Cancer Society.
