Hot Issue du Jour: Obama Administration Leasing Policy – Mackenzie Stumbling Block is Still Dehcho – 26th Alaska Legislature Ends With Many Energy Actions

Hot Issue du Jour: Obama Administration Leasing Policy: Call To Action Dan Dickinson (NGP Photo) Summarizes Legislative Session Today At Noon 1.  Mackenzie progress.  Sympatica.  Dehcho Grand Chief Sam Gargan said the pipeline should not go ahead until the First Nations resolve two outstanding issues with Ottawa: the unsettled land claim and a land-use and resource management plan for Dehcho territory. 2.  Domestic Energy Crisis.  Canada's Globe and Mail describes America's domestic energy crisis better than we can.  The urgent message below from Canada describes why we should all join the [...]

Alaska Legislature OFFICIALLY Creates A Legislatively Funded, Task Force

While Lawmakers Were Mesmerized and Traumatized By the Failed Attempt of Coastal Elected Leaders to Empower 'Coastal Policy Boards' (SB4) to Stifle Alaska Development, Another Potentially Harmful Measure Passed Without Controversy (HCR22) Saturday, members of the Senate officially turned Alaska greener with passage of an innocent-looking but life-changing resolution that gives the global warming movement credibility, endangers Alaska sovereignty, enables the Legislature to oppose Administration policies, enables a 'Task Force' which could oppose the will of a majority of legislators, and provides a powerful, new tool for those who wish [...]

Weekend Updates: Coastal Policy Board Concept Could Threaten State Sovereignty and Stifle Development

The Alaska Dispatch, quoted below, suggests that the Governor could compromise in an effort to bring 'peace' to the Capitol.  This writer humbly suggests that the peace was threatened by those wishing to establish an unusually powerful Coastal Policy Board concept.  Advocates of a Coastal Policy Board have threatened House and Senate leaders with opposing their House and Senate organizational effort next year and with more actively siding with environmental activists against future development projects.  With such aggression, compromise is not needed.  Courage is needed.  The bullies--not the bullied--threaten the [...]

Beware the Lurking Legislative Tsunami, “Alaska Northern Waters Task Force”, HCR 22 & SCR 17 … Even As We Keep One Wary Eye On the Dangerous Alaska Coastal Policy Board (SB4)

Heads Up, Readers: It's Not Over Until its Over! by Dave Harbour (See 2. below) 1.  Yesterday (Scroll down) we commented on how close Alaska's Legislature is to transferring a key, constitutional authority of Alaska State Government to rural political entities.  The Alaska Standard also carried this commentary on how creation of a coastal policy board concept could violate Alaska's constitution, compromise the public interest, engender corruption, further cripple Alaska's investment climate and diminish future state jobs and revenue. We should also note that while some legislators are succumbing to [...]

State’s Legislature Is On the Brink of Serving A Slice of Alaska’s Sovereignty to The North Slope Borough and Coastal Villages – TransCanada President Retires

See our earlier warning: Beware A Divided and Storm-Tossed Ship of State   Alaska Dispatch by Rena Delbridge.  The push by rural lawmakers for greater control of development in coastal areas throttledup Wednesday, as a Senate panel fast-forwarded a bill to a full floor debate.  But Gov. Sean Parnell (NGP Photo-r) remains as steadfastly against such a bill as ever, saying he simply cannot support handing over control of resources like oil, gas and timber, to local people when those resources belong to the state and play an important role in [...]

Legislature Winds Down Without Improving Alaska’s Investment Climate – More On Yesterday’s Sinopec-COP Report

(Comment: We note that COP is one of Canada's and one of Alaska's largest producers, that China has been an increasingly active investor in Canada, and that China has tested Alaska's investment waters.  If the Government of Canada approves COP's asset sale to China, we may expect to see more interest in Chinese investments in North America, including Alaska.  See our Story of Chairman Wu Bangguo's visit to Anchorage (NGP photo, w/Governor Sean Parnell).  -dh)  Maritime & Energy.  Chinese firms have been scouring the globe for investments in energy assets to [...]

“What Goes Around Comes Around” – Sinopec and COP Make Syncrude Deal

See Our Earlier Oil/Gas/Cruise Ship Tax Policy Comment Alaska Dispatch by Rena Delbridge.  Senators may have tightened up the title of a gas tax bill to curtail monkey business in the House, but that hasn't smoothed the bill's progress before representatives.  Now an afternoon hearing is delayed until the full House Resources committee can meet with Attorney General Dan Sullivan (NGP Photo-l), who has briefed two members already with information panel chair Rep. Craig Johnson, R-Anchorage, thinks will smooth out disagreements.  (Our Comment: While well intended, this bill would have the effect of increasing [...]

NEB Hears Final Mackenzie Arguments and Skeptics Abound – Legislators Rush To Be Relevant to South Central Alaska Energy Crisis – ADN Supports LNG Extension

KTUU Story by Ted Lamb.  Our commentary: As the Legislative Session winds down, leaders have constructed an in-state, ANS gas pipeline plan.  We ask them to consider one question: "What signal does that send to potential investors in Cook Inlet gas exploration, development and storage projects?"  -dh ADN by Tim Bradner (NGP Photo).  State and community leaders have finally focused on the serious threat we face with pending natural gas shortages in Southcentral Alaska, and it's about time. AJC by Tim Bradner.  Preliminary estimates of what it might cost to build a [...]

Marian Call Entertains Us….

Marian Call (NGP Photo) sang like an Alaska nightingale last night, her last Alaska performance before launching a year-long tour of the Lower 48.  Enjoy a few of the photos below and check out her Website, here.  Sometimes--as a point of personal privilege on this gas pipeline webpage--we make note of personal things that mean much. Marian Call should mean much to all Alaskans.  Join me in wishing her well as she takes her remarkable talent on the road for a year...like a Northern artist breaking trail in the Lower 48 to become [...]

Aftermath of Denali’s FERC Filing – Canadian News

Reuters by Yereth Rosen.  The cost estimate for that 1,700-mile project is $32 billion to $41 billion, according to the TransCanada-Exxon Mobil open-season plan. Those companies have received FERC permission to start a 90-day open season on April 30.  Denali President Bud Fackrell (NGP Photo) said the company has 'a really high-quality design and execution plan' and believes its $35 billion estimate is well supported.  'We have to give confidence to the shippers that we know what this project is going to cost. We feel very good about that,' Fackrell [...]

We have seen the Titanic, and it is us.

Beware a Divided and Storm-Tossed Ship of State by Dave Harbour If Rena Delbridge is right (NGP Photo), and she always seems to be, her Alaska Dispatch article yesterday reveals the tip of an iceberg that could well sink Ship Alaska.   For our ship of state to have a chance of traversing a deep sea amid many economic and social storms--raging nationally and here at home--we must work together.  Working against each other could let our vulnerable vessel slip broadside into a deep trough before the coming seas. Absent [...]

A Great Week For Shell and For Alaska!

State Senate Leader Further Erodes Investment Climate: Producers Would Pay $2 Billion More/Year When/If Gas Pipeline Flows! -dh Senator Murkowski's Thursday Speech Video   Yesterday morning, while speaking to a 7:30 a.m. crowd at the Resource Development in Anchorage, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (NGP Photo, w/RDC President Wendy Lindskoog) raised her vibrating Blackberry and announced that the Environmental Protection Agency had, in wake of President Barack Obama's OCS proclamation this week, approved Shell's Chukchi Sea Clean Air Act permit. Shell Alaska's Vice President, Pete Slaiby smiled as eyes turned on him [...]
