Senate Finance May Help Create an Economy Killer, A Coastal Management Board – Mayor’s Energy Task Force Reports – Legislature Fails on Tax Improvements

Comment:  Yesterday we appeared on the Dan Fagan (NGP Photo, w/author) radio program (Link coming) to discuss current coastal management, tax, and regulatory issues affecting the survival of Alaska's economy.  While we focused on a number of immediate threats to the economy, I wish we could have had time to throw KUDOS to several legislators who battled for improvement of Alaska's tax structure (like Rep. Craig Johnson) and incentives for providing more gas exploration and storage in Cook Inlet (like Rep. Mike Hawker) and to Governor Sean Parnell NGP (Photo-l) for his leadership [...]

Harbour Addresses Alaska Railroad Board – Eric Lidji Thoughtfully Addresses A Gas Pipeline Alternative

Could A Government Sponsored ANS Bullet Line Kill Cook Inlet Private Investment in Gas Exploration and Storage? Alaska Railroad Testimony, 3-25-10 Commentary By Dave Harbour Juneau Empire by Pat Forgery.  Some Alaska legislators are promising big things by developing Alaska's natural gas for use by its citizens, but Gov. No Energy Policy Impacts Alaska

One Asks: With No National Energy Policy, What Are Alaska's Prospects for Refilling TAPS With NPR or OCS Oil? Houston Chronicle by John Hofmeister.  With no national energy policy, here's the track record. In the past five years the nation's electric utilities have shelved plans for more than 100 new coal plants because the barriers were too great to build them. Leaders Misunderstand Economics 101

Commentary. We find it revealing that the current mindset of Alaska elected leaders seems to be: 1) Raise taxes on those who supply major source of money and jobs for Alaska, then 2) witness a dimishment of money and jobs, then 3) ponder about how to give incentives for improving the investment climate but only if an employer will guarantee that incentives will be spent in a certain way.  (Note: this is the characteristic of a government that wants to control the 'means of production', not a government that wants [...]
