Colorful Canadian Energy Names – The Alaska Standard Covers Begich’s Arctic Speech

The Alaska Standard covers Senator Begich's speech describing his Arctic legislation and we comment.      *         We earlier opined on an element of Begich's Arctic legislation in the ADN: two days after the paper took its own editorial position.       *        Calgary Herald by Dan Healing.  ...monikers bring to mind images of massive beasts dying at the hands of primitive tribesmen and falling into tarpits to become over the ages the vast Alberta petroleum resources of today -- a far [...]

Senator Mark Begich Introduces Arctic Legislation – See Penn State’s New Marcellus Shale Study – There’s A New EIA Administrator In Town!

Yesterday, Bob King from Senator Mark Begich's (NGP Photo) office thoughtfully sent us a copy of Senator  Begich's first floor speech (Printed in full, below), given in conjunction with his  introduction of Inuvikput legislation dealing with "...oil exploration, climate change, shipping, health, and diplomacy in America's Arctic."  Clearly, Senator Begich is setting out to claim his own turf in the U.S. Senate, turf entitling him to suggest and champion new policies representing America's place in the Arctic.  Not surprisingly, such initiative should also assist him in the quest to become a champion of Alaska's northernmost residents.  (See the [...]

Our Story of Tom Brennan’s Book Makes it to Juneau Empire

Juneau Empire, by Randi Spray.  Anchorage author Tom Brennan will be in Juneau Saturday to sign copies of his new book, "Snowflake Rebellion." The book, released in April, follows what would happen if Alaska broke with the union. The hero, Colin Callihan, is a PR officer at an oil company and the villians are members of the enviromental lobby and federal government. Brennan revealed the source of inspiration for the novel at a May 15 meeting of the Alaska Support Industry Alliance, recorded by friend Dave Harbour of Northern Gas Pipelines, [...]

Best Explanation of Gasoline Prices

ADN OpEd by Jeff Cook.  (Author's note: Ill informed consumers--often let by politicians with special interest agendas--sometimes accuse energy providers of rigging prices.  While such a regretable circumstance is always possible, it is rare, due partly to the web of regulatory and statutory constraints guarding against bad practices.  Increasingly, as politicians make energy prices more expensive by increasing regulatory burdens and blocking domestic exploration and attempting to subsidize uneconomic alternate energy industries, they will attempt to demonize the fossil energy producers, manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors.  The lesson to be learned [...]

Alaska OCS Court Ruling Favorable

Liberal.  With even Indian and Northern Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl admitting there was nothing new in the Conservative’s latest Northern Strategy re-announcement, Larry Bagnell (NGP Photo, with author), Liberal Critic for Arctic Issues and Northern Development cautioned Canadians not to be fooled by more Arctic promises still not kept. “Stephen Harper made a grand list of promises to northerners to get their votes but he’s never apologized for breaking them,” said Mr. Bagnell. “Northerners are tired of being used for photo-ops by a do-little government when they see few signs of progress [...]
