8-19-14 Today Alaskan Voters Determine Their Future!

Primary Election Day In Alaska A Historic Day Whereupon Alaskan Voters Will Determine the Future Of Their State and Their Country! by Dave Harbour (Responses to commentary) Alaska: Where A Deal Is A Deal? Last Spring we wrote a four part series, here, on Alaska's oil tax history going back to forty years.  We also explored Alaska's current status as a competitive investment climate and coined a phrase: "In Alaska, Is A Deal A Deal?", and variations on that theme. In one column, below, we explored the concept of a competitive investment climate/tax [...]

8-15-14 Shame on you for not backing up!!!

Dear NGP Reader: KTUU.  Dillingham is more than 100 miles downstream from where the Pebble Partnership would like to mine copper and gold. It's the biggest city in the Bristol Bay region, a place where many voices can be heard. (See our earlier reports.) We had one of the most important commentaries in our history ready for this morning when the electrical power failed and we lost four hours worth of work.   You are, therefore, entitled and encouraged to give us a stern look accompanied by your gentle but firm [...]

8-14-13 Yes, Russian Eyes Are On Canada, Alaska and the Lower 48

Commentary: We can't help wondering about wandering Russian eyes, now turned more than ever toward the Arctic, shared by Canada and U.S., among others.  With more incursions of Russian bombers into our airspace, with Russian aggression and energy blackmail occuring in Ukraine, with Russian interest in Exxon's Point Tompson Field, with increasing Russian involvement in North American energy projects, and, now, with Russia lobbying against exports to Europe, we wonder -- as do our good readers -- at how entangling energy alliances involving Russia will affect Alaskan and Canadian energy [...]

ADN by Tim Bradner.  The contentious vote on Ballot Measure 1, asking voters whether or not to repeal the oil production tax change made in 2013, is seven days away. RELATED:  Tim Bradner: Alaska could use more of the independent spirit Buccaneer displayed Tim Bradner: Without LNG, what's our Plan B? But since everyone else is blathering on about this, I want my final two cents’ worth. Two arguments made for the repeal, and against the new tax law, really surprise me. One is that the change will cost revenues and rob [...]

Note: The Resource Development Council for Alaska (RDC) urges our NGP readers in Anchorage to attend and testify at an EPA Public Hearing TOMORROW.  We and RDC believe that any project in Alaska should be vetted through existing permitting processes, and be properly evaluated through the National Environmental Policy Act.  Public testimony will be limited to two minutes per person, with tribal [...]

8-7-14 NIMBY and “palpable tensions” among stakeholders

A Fairbanks columnist (i.e. below) admits a conflict of interest -- then opposes a pipeline gravel site possibly needed for a gas pipeline that could lower Fairbanks consumer energy costs.   It is a classic example of NIMBY, "Not In My Back Yard".  We do not suggest it is improper for a columnist to pen commentary.  Neither do we proclaim NIMBY to be a 'bad' thing.  We do suggest NIMBY is a reality upon which pipeline 'stakeholder relations' professionals must concentrate.   There is a palpable tension among various special interests: affected [...]

News Miner by Jeff Richardson.  Jim Plaquet has crunched the numbers, and he presents a few pieces of scratch paper filled with tiny handwritten figures to prove it.  Contractors, welding shops, trucking companies and more — they’ve all seen an employment boost since the Legislature passed Senate Bill 21, its industry-friendly overhaul of the state’s oil tax structure. Last winter — the first production season since the new system was signed in 2013 — included a hiring spike that hasn’t been seen in years, he said.

Globe & Mail by Gwyn Morgan.  The proposed Northern Gateway project has become a flashpoint for the growing debate about the safety of oil pipelines.
