Comment:  We have attempted to recognize elected officials who have consistently defended Alaska before federal tribunals.  Though we are traveling today, we wanted faithful readers to know that for tomorrow we will make note of another elected official (NGP Photo, Representative Charisse Millett) who has been consistently supportive of Alaska interests in the face of the overreaching federal assault on Alaska's economic interests.  Until tomorrow,   -dh

Yesterday, we participated in an outstanding presentation delivered to members of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners by "Fueling California" Chairman, Bob Sturtz (NGP Photo).  The presentation sought to demonstrate how California's experience could help energy consumers everywhere.   Since our readers know that state and federal energy policies are overlapping, we present this link that provides much useful information.  In general, California's experience is that political manipulation of energy programs, subsidies, regulations and a greenhouse gas emissions voter initiative has dramatically increased energy costs for consumers.  -dh EPA Deadline [...]

See our earlier story on President's poor leasing record.  -dh On Wednesday, the House Natural Resources Committee approved by a bipartisan 24-17 vote, H.R. 6082, the Congressional Replacement of President Obama’s Energy-Restricting and Job-Limiting Offshore Drilling Plan. The bill would replace the Obama Administration’s final offshore drilling plan, which keeps 85 percent of America’s offshore areas off-limits to energy production, with a real plan that creates new American jobs by allowing offshore American energy production in those areas with the greatest known oil and natural gas resources. “For over three years the Obama [...]

Brad Keithley (NGP Photo) Commentary.  The Alaska "House Special Committee on Fiscal Policy " (this week) released a new website focused on "Understanding Alaska's Budget."  The website may explain much more than the authors intend about how Alaska has worked itself into its coming fiscal crisis -- and why recent legislatures have made the problem worse. The press release  announcing the website provides the first clue.  The release quotes the Chair of the House Special Committee as follows: “We’re in the cat-bird seat, financially, now, but with throughput this week under 400,000 barrels, and with a volatile oil price, [...]

Saskatchewan's other Bakkan, from Gary Park, Petroleum News Comment:  How many Alaskans/Americans are now in the mood for another TEA PARTY?  In fact, Shouldn't we celebrate that original 1773 event this coming November 4?   We've continually cautioned in these pages that for almost four years the state of Alaska -- especially the natural resources sector upon which our economy depends -- has received nothing but harassment and negative treatment by an authoritarian and ... Sidebar Comment: We note that Alaska is only one local US Jurisdiction under attack by the Obama Administration's [...]

Oil & Gas Congress Returns to Alaska - Today's CEA Energy Links Calgary Herald by Dina O'Meara.  Exports to the United States have been falling steadily since 2008 and the pain will intensify by almost half a billion cubic feet per day in November when two major pipeline expansions breach the border to bring the U.S. shale gas to storage hubs in Ontario.   Alaska Journal of Commerce by Tim Bradner (NGP Photo).  With its Arctic drill fleet now assembled in Dutch Harbor, Shell is waiting on unpredictable Mother Nature. Summer ice conditions along the northern Alaska coast are the worst in a 10-year period, Shell spokesman Curtis Smith (NGP Photo-R) said July 9.   The heavy ice has caused target dates for the company’s first drilling at two exploration prospects in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas to be pushed into the first week of August, Smith said.  “This is the heaviest ice coverage we [...]

Chairman Doc Hastings (NGP Photo) invites Interior Department officials to the 'hot seat'.   House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (WA-04) on Friday, July 13 sent a letter to Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar regarding the Committee’s request for transcribed interviews with five Department officials who were personally involved in developing the May 2010 Interior Department report that falsely stated independent engineers had peer reviewed and supported a drilling moratorium.  In this follow-up letter, Chairman Hastings states that he intends to invite the five Department officials, and possibly [...]

ADN by Paul Jenkins.  Slated for the Aug. 28 primary ballot, Ballot Measure 2 is an initiative from hell: a convoluted, 15-page freak show slapped together behind closed doors. The state estimates it would cost $5.4 million to run this vague, unvetted scheme.  The 703-word measure -- the longest in state history -- would create an entirely new coastal management regime. It would defang the Legislature, end-run the Alaska Constitution and subject development in Alaska to the capricious whim of a new, powerful and unaccountable bureaucracy bound by few, if [...]

CBC.  A litre of self-serve regular gasoline is up to $1.277 in the Halifax area. The House of Representatives yesterday passed H.R. 4402, the National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act, sponsored by Rep. Mark Amodei, by a bipartisan vote of 256-160.  The bill would streamline government red tape to allow the U.S. to more efficiently develop our Nation's strategic and critical minerals, such as rare earth elements, that are vital to job creation, American economic competitiveness and national security.   This bill, if coupled with more reasonable leasing of [...]

7-11-12 – Congress Reschedules Markup to Revise Obama’s Offshore Leasing Plan

In this Calgary Herald story by Jim Wood, Canadian Ambassador to the US, Gary Doer, says American support for the Keystone XL Pipeline is strong.  -dh Yesterday, as part of a more than year long investigation into the Obama Administration’s rewrite of a 2008 coal regulation, the Stream Buffer Zone Rule, that could cost thousands of jobs, negatively impact the economies of 22 states and significantly harm American energy production, Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (NGP Photo) sent a letter to Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and [...]

7-10-12 – Administration Violates Alaska’s Environmental Rules While Advocating “Environmental Cooperation”

Commentary: Alaska Legislator, Representative Charisse Millett (NGP Photo-r), will testify Thursday that the Bureau of Land Management fails to meet environmental standards required of private industry and citizens.   She will be joined by Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (AOGCC) Chairman, Kathy Foerster (NGP Photo), whom we credit -- along with her commission colleagues -- with bringing the matter of abandoned, government legacy wells to public attention.   We acknowledge that previous administrations, the U.S. Navy and others share blame for littering Alaska with spent oil and gas exploration material [...]
