Edmonton Journal by Dan Healing (Calgary Herald).  The oil and gas industry moved to shut down vulnerable facilities throughout southern Alberta as a deluge of water from the Bow and Elbow rivers cut off their downtown Calgary head office towers Friday.  Thousands of workers were told to stay home overnight Thursday on the advice of civic officials and in reaction to power and potential natural gas supply cutoffs.  "The directive to our folks out in the field is shut in anything you think is in danger," said Rob Evans, spokesman [...]

Governor Sean Parnell (NGP Photo) testerday underscored the State’s commitment to get Alaska’s gas to Alaskans first and then to markets beyond. Progress is being made on two fronts. The Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC) received legislative authorization this past session to carry Alaska’s interests in a natural gas pipeline. Additionally, North Slope producers BP, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil, along with TC-Alaska, proceeded to the stage of project concept selection on a large volume Alaska LNG project.

Energy In Depth.  A new study by the Center for Environmental Health uses well-worn talking points to claim that hydraulic fracturing – a process in use for more than 65 years – poses health threats to women and children.  Tellingly, the report offers no evidence of this occurring and conveniently leaves out the fact that health is improving in communities where shale development and hydraulic fracturing is taking place. 6-18-13 Environmental Opposition and Political Wrangling Threaten Canadian Energy Projects

CBC News.  The Conference Board of Canada says uncertainty over new pipeline projects poses a threat to Canadian companies that provide services to oil and gas producers. The Ottawa-based think-tank predicts the sector's real economic output this year will drop slightly by $60 million, or half a per cent, to $11.55 billion.  It says some of that is due to a lingering weakness in natural gas prices and a levelling off in conventional oil drilling.  The board says the "bigger threat" is the lack of pipeline capacity, as environmental opposition [...]

Edmonton Journal, by Sheila Pratt.  “As you go forward, keep in mind the obligation and the opportunity to give back,” said James Prentice (NGP Photo), a senior executive vice-president for CIBC.  Though his own father told him to stay away from politics, Prentice ran for office in 2004 and was re-elected in 2006. He stepped down in late 2010 — though he did promise his father he’d leave politics “with his name intact.”  Which leads to his second bit of advice — stand up for your convictions.
