ADN/PNA by Eric Lidji. The Regulatory Commission of Alaska is letting four owners of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline keep charging higher shipping rates on oil bound for Alaska markets while it continues investigating whether the rate increases are reasonable. CBC. Bob McLeod (NGP Photo) said if the blowout — which has led to a massive oil spill off the coast of Louisiana — leads to tighter U.S. environmental restrictions on oil production, there could be more demand for natural gas from places like the N.W.T.'s Mackenzie Delta, where a gas pipeline has [...]

Economics 101. On April 6 at Anchorage's Denaina Convention Center, Northrim Bank Chairman Marc Langland issued a challenge that Alaska's business and political address state fiscal policy issues. Your author asked the event host for his perception of Economics 101 and Alaska's oil tax policy. We are happy that the Alaska Standard obtained Langland's response: a pithy and useful economics review. Northrim hosted [...]
In Spite of the terrible Gulf of Mexico spill, America still needs oil and gas. If we don't obtain it domestically, we will send our jobs and money to foreign exporters in order to purchase theirs. The adult in the room, I think, would not underestimate or overreact to the Gulf spill. He would say, "Let's do what we can to minimize damage, compensate those who were damaged, take action to assure it doesn't happen again and continue to develop robust, domestic, oil and gas leasing programs." -dh Comment Here! May 3 Deadline: Please Give Your OCS Opinion, here, After Reading This NARUC Report Alaska Standard by Dan Dickinson (NGP Photo). Is a gas pipeline economic? First if investors think that commodity prices in the future won’t cover the tariff – and at today’s prices and estimated tariffs they certainly won’t – there will be no gas line. Moreover, if investors suspect that the State has no other new sources of revenue they will be equally reluctant to invest in a gas line. Unknown future taxes on a potential gasline can [...]
