The Alaska Dispatch's Josh Saul (NGP Photo coming) came over for an 'interview' and walked away with video footage.  Josh is a long-time Alaskan; with roots deeply entrenched here while waving in the breezes of wanderlust, his branches yearn to touch other places.  He is a traveler, a writer, a videographer, a philosopher-in-the-making and one of the nicest guys you'd want to meet.  During our afternoon together I was reaching a conclusion that his folks had done a great job raising him when he disclosed that they are, indeed, the owner [...]

Governor Challenges Feds – Point Hope and Environmental Extremists Challenge Alaska’s Future – Alaska Dispatch Interviews North Slope Borough Mayor Edward Itta

By |2016-03-13T04:02:11-09:00January 21st, 2010|Uncategorized|

Governor Sean Parnell's (NGP Photo) State of the State speech last night properly challenged the Federal government for its improper attacks on Alaska's economy.  "Today, however, the federal government’s actions often seem at war with Alaskan interests.  The federal government has misused the Endangered Species Act as a regulatory weapon to delay development of Alaska’s resources. Now, they have proposed setting aside an area larger than the state of California as critical habitat for polar bears. I strongly oppose such overreactive ESA listings and critical habitat designations. These are job killers and [...]

Alaska Dispatch Blog by Jim Behlke.  According to a December 27, 2009 Toronto Star article, the proposed 760-mile Mackenzie Valley Natural Gas Pipeline from northwest Canada's Beaufort Sea coast to Alberta had an estimated cost (in 2003) of as low as C$2 billion. Costs had swollen to C$16.2 billion by 2007, (amounting to about C$21 million per mile) and were "expected to rise further if shovels ever turn the ground." This 30-inch pipeline would only have a third or less of the capacity of an Alaska-to-Alberta pipeline, and it would span [...]

Alaska Oil Taxes – $43 Billion in Canadian Pipelines – Alaskans Note Mackenzie Progress – New Web: Greening of Oil

By |2016-03-13T03:57:24-09:00January 18th, 2010|Uncategorized|

ADN Opinion.  Some recent gas pipeline news from Canada has Alaskans wondering whether our big North Slope project faces renewed competition from elsewhere in the Arctic. Canada's Mackenzie Valley project has now cleared a half-decade-long review of its environmental and social impacts. The $16 billion project had been stalled by the intensive review. At 1.2 billion cubic feet a day, Mackenzie would be a little more than a quarter the size of Alaska's project, and its gas is scheduled to hit North American markets sooner. Some key companies in Alaska's [...]

ADN Editorial.  "For the first time in 22 years the (Alaska) economy did not grow this year and we will end it with fewer jobs than we had in January," Dr. Goldsmith noted. He also expects the Alaska economy to contract next year, with tourism facing the most obvious impediments to growth. More Perspectives: Joint Review Panel on Mackenzie Project – Cairo Report #2 – Also, Kudos to Chuck Gray of NARUC

By |2016-03-13T04:05:05-09:00January 1st, 2010|Uncategorized|

National Journal by Chuck Gray (NGP Photo).  NARUC strongly supports improved energy efficiency as the first option for achieving greater energy security, but conservation alone will not be enough to address anticipated demand. To become truly energy independent, Congress and the Obama Administration will need to keep all options on the table—efficiency, renewables, fossil fuels, natural gas, and nuclear. All of these fuels have domestic components, and all must be considered if we are going to wean ourselves from inhospitable foreign energy sources.  (See our February 2010 story, 'After The Moratoria Report') [...]
