1-15-13 – Part II Of The Alliance Report And Much Ado About Gas Pipelines

Peninsula Clarion by Brian Smith.  Local lawmakers will pitch several measures addressing issues like an in-state gas line, corporate taxes, interstate mining lobbying and governmental audits when the first session of the 28th Alaska State Legislature gavels in Tuesday.  Perhaps the biggest piece of legislation a local legislator has tagged his or her name to is House Bill 4, the newest incarnation of last year’s effort from House Speaker Mike Chenault (NGP Photo-L) and Rep. Mike Hawker (NGP Photo) to see a 24-inch, 500 mcf per day gasline built from the [...]

The Hill by Zack Coleman.  Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, has threatened subpoenaing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for documents regarding a potential Alaska mine.  Issa, along with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), said he wants to know more about the intentions behind a water impact test EPA is conducting near a discussed mine site in Bristol Bay, Alaska.  The lawmakers said in a Thursday letter that EPA’s actions have “bordered on the absurd” by since the committee's initial May 10 inquiry [...]

ADN by Mike Dunham.  The overwhelming majority of Alaska is getting colder and has been since 2000, according to a study by researchers with the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  (We note that several of the Obama Administration decisions to inflict the Endangered Species Act furies on Alaska are based on the notion that although various species (i.e. Polar Bear (NGP Photo), seals, beluga whales) are doing well in Alaska, they COULD someday be adversely affected by global warming/climate change and that the government should, therefore, restrict human activity [...]

1-3-13 – Northern Gas Pipelines: “Canadian Policy Making At Its Worst”

Globe and Mail, by Brian Lee Crowley and Ken Coates, re: Northern Gas Pipelines's Difficult History.  The bitter debate over the Northern Gateway oil pipeline project shows Canadian policy-making at its worst. A piece of nationally significant infrastructure, the project is currently mired in a toxic mess, assailed by environmentalists, targeted by vote-hungry B.C. politicians and publicly challenged by many first nations. You could be forgiven for feeling a dreadful sense of déjà vu. Daily Caller by David Holt (NGP Photo).  Over the past year, energy has moved from newspapers’ business and science sections to their front pages. From the president’s highly controversial decision on the Keystone XL pipeline to new assessments of prolific U.S. oil and natural gas reserves, American energy dominated the headlines this year — and for good reason. High gasoline anddiesel prices threaten to curtail the economic recovery and ongoing turmoil overseas has refocused the country’s attention on the importance of energy security.

2-18-12 Sell Alaska?

Calgary Herald by Dan Healing. Athabasca Oil Corp. said Monday it plans to invest $798 million overall in capital spending in 2013, with most of that going to its thermal oilsands projects.  “With the Duvernay results coming in, with the industry interest in the Duvernay increasing a lot lately, it’s a place with our 350,000 net acres (140,000 hectares), we will have to take partners in the future, just too much cost,” said chief executive Sveinung Svarte...."   We are delighted to note that the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce [...]

12-5-12 – “Call to Action”

Our friends at the Resource Development Council for Alaska write this morning: Congress is currently considering the Coast Guard reauthorization bill.  Passage of this legislation presents an opportunity to achieve a short to mid-term solution to Alaska¹s concern with the Emission Control Area (ECA).  Your help is needed immediately, as there is a small window of opportunity. The U.S. House of Representatives will likely pass a Coast Guard authorization bill soon. At this  point, the best hope is to get language inserted into the Senate version. Action requested: RDC encourages its members to thank [...]

CBC/AP.  It's a decision U.S. President Barack Obama put off during this year's election campaign, but now that he's won a second term, his next move on the proposed oil pipeline between Alberta and Texas may signal how he will deal with climate and energy issues in the four years ahead.  (Comment: Note the stacked, unused TransCanada pipe on the right, as Obama appeared in Cushing, Ok., during the campaign.  In the early 1970s Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) pipe rested for several years, stacked and waiting for Congressional authorization.  That [...]

Houston Chronicle: Energy alliance official: Keystone approval likely soon.  “I think there’s no doubt the Keystone pipeline will be approved in fairly short order and generate economic growth,” John Northington, counsel to the alliance, said. But Northington and former Bush campaign official Michael Whatley (NGP Photo), executive vice president of the alliance, agreed looming talks about tax reform threaten to hurt independent drilling companies if the tax credit for intangible drilling costs is cut or eliminated. “If you take away those intangible drilling costs (for) independent producers, 25 percent of their [...]

10-26-12 – U.S. Congressman Doc Hastings Focuses On Alaska’s Energy Potential!

Note Canadian Energy Challenges Below Friday Alert and Comment:  U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (NGP Photo) has been one of the top two advocates in the entire United States Congress for adopting a reasonable national energy policy--in our studied opinion.  Since Alaska composes 3/4 of America's coastline, 20% of her total land mass and holds, arguably, the preponderance of America's potential oil, gas, coal and strategic metals reserves, his voice is as critical to Alaska as it is to the nation.  Here is a statement Chairman [...]

Will Americans Elect Wiser, More Energy Savvy Officials In November?  Commentary by Dave Harbour Today's Wall Street Journal Editorial.  President Obama is campaigning as a champion of the oil and gas boom he's had nothing to do with, and even as his regulators try to stifle it. The latest example is the Interior Department's little-noticed August decision to close off from drilling nearly half of the 23.5 million acre National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska.  The area is called the National Petroleum Reserve because in 1976 Congress designated it as a [...]
