Hundreds of Citizen Responses To Federal Government Assaults On Domestic Energy Are Pouring In — Pro-Energy Opinions Needed!

1.  Clean Air Act Permit - EPA - Shell.  (Please comment here prior to October 20)  Example: 10-8-09.  Rick Braun, Anchorage.  Sirs:  I thought the comment period had closed already, but since it is still open I wish to say that the permit SHOULD be issued and soon.  The exploration of the Chukchi Sea by Shell can be done safely and will result in significant  additions to our state's economy and the nation's energy resources. Both are vital.  I do not see any need to restrict Shell's ship operations by [...]

Biloxi Round-up, by Dave Harbour (NGP Photo, with Arnold Jackson of Danbury Resources).  The Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission was born in an age of intense emotional and economic dissent over a half century ago, at the dawn of the modern American oil and gas industry.  Authorized by an act of Congress to help states better coordinate the efficient removal of energy resources, the IOGCC today carries on a proud tradition of coordinating best practices among its over three dozen oil and gas producing states' members.   Below, the Dallas News [...]

Yesterday morning in Buloxi, Mississippi, Governor Sean Parnell (see video) kept approval of Alaska OCS and implementation of an Alaska gas pipeline at the top of his priority list.  Parnell shared a morning podium with IOGCC Chairman Brad Henry of Oklahoma, Mississippi Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant and Texas Governor Rick Perry (2009-10 Chairman).  (NGP Photo, Parnell-l and Bryant)     Silo Breaker, reprint of Tim Bradner article.  Rock-bottom prices for natural gas aside, there's a lot of worry that the new U.S. boom in gas production from shale in addition to [...]

What would Alaska be like today…

...without the Joint Federal-State Oil and Gas Beaufort Sea Lease Sale of 1979 thirty years ago?  What would Alaska be without the 30-year-old Alaska Support Industry Alliance whose first formal action was to support that 1979 lease sale?  Hit the Alliance website here today as an expression of appreciation for its Members' 30 years of service to the families of Alaska!  Where would we be, indeed; I don't know exactly, but Alaska's circumstances would be decidedly less prosperous.   Commentary: As the Alliance celebrates 30 years of success, we [...]

Mayor Sullivan Takes Control of Southcentral Alaska’s Energy Challenges

Today, Mayor Dan Sullivan (NGP Photo) invited CEOs of the major Southcentral Alaska energy utilities to join him for a public briefing on actions his Administration is taking to successfully confront any possible energy shortages during peak use periods.  Those 'peak' periods generally occur before and after the normal work day when Alaska's winters are coldest and darkest.  That circumstance produces the biggest demand from business and residential customers for electric light and heat, and, for natural gas hot water and room heating.  Before and after work are generally the times in [...]

Today’s Headline Is ANS LNG. Yesterday’s Headline Was ANS Propane. Is Either Economical?

If you missed yesterday's story on ANS propane or Monday's review of the OCS-EPA issue, please consider clicking to them today.  We believe these are two of the most important Alaska developments of the year! Commentary.  The Alaska Dispatch's Rena Delbridge (NGP Photo) is among the best oil and gas reporters ever to grace our State and today she brings us the story of a marriage between the Alaska Gasline Port Authority (AGPA) and Fairbanks Natural Gas (FNG).  We wrote of this possibility yesterday in our propane commentary as an idea, a possibility, [...]

Alaska North Slope Propane Project: Energy Lifesaver for Rural and Urban Alaska?

Commentary and News: ANS Propane Could Be the Biggest Story of 2009! by Dave Harbour, NGP Publisher If there is an opportunity, I will invest some of my retirement savings on a state agency's impressive orchestration of a solid, public-private partnership designed to make North Slope Liquid Propane Gas Available to Alaska consumers at reasonable but not subsidized prices.   Mary Ann Pease, (NGP Photo), an Alaska Natural Gas Development Authority (ANGDA) consultant, said yesterday that a large, two-day business meeting in the ANGDA offices last Thursday and Friday resulted in her [...]

SHELL OIL’S AIR QUALITY PERMITS COULD MAKE OR BREAK ALASKA!

EPA Hearing News and Commentary by Dave Harbour, NGP Publisher  At what point does Shell Oil decide that its $2.3 + billion investment in Alaska's OCS is a lost cause?  Hopefully, Shell's dedication, patience and risk will pay off for its shareholders, for Alaska and for America's national security.  Shell's OCS success is critical, because as we have said here consistently, OCS (with federal-state revenue sharing) is vital to the economic survival of Alaska.  And an EPA Clean Air Act permit is critical to Shell's OCS investment moving forward in 2010. [...]

“Alaska’s” FERC Commissioner Returns Home – Southcentral Gas Short – 20 Testify for OCS – Greens Oppose Mackenzie Pipe – Government Budgets Big for Mackenzie

We'll Have An Exclusive North Slope Gas Story For Readers Tomorrow! Federal Energy Regulatory Commissioner (FERC) Phil Moeller (NGP Photo) visited Alaska last week and told a Commonwealth North gathering Friday night that he thought of himself as "Alaska's FERC Commissioner" because of his work in a Southeast Alaska cannery during his college years.  "Because of my time here," he said, "I probably have a good idea of how Alaskans react to issues."  In other extemporaneous remarks Friday evening, Moeller downplayed the domestic gas competition for Alaska North Slope (ANS) [...]

Chuck Webber Passes….

We again exercise our point of personal privilege by noting with sadness the passing of our long-time friend, Chuck Webber.  Chuck was always an advocate of free enterprise as we shared leadership with the Anchorage Chamber and he went on to become Commissioner of Commerce for Alaska.  Needless to say, we spend many pleasant hours over many cups of coffee and meals discussing economic development philosophies in general and gas pipeline mode and routing alternatives in particular.  ADN did a good job summarizing his history and accomplishments here.  One Chamber [...]
