11-18-12 Notes From the Road

Dear Readers: We continue our photo, writing and other assignments as we explore more of Ecuador, this time the many micro climates leading gradually down from Cuenca to Loja and Vilcabamba.   We cannot speak too highly of the delectable, organic food and the sweetness of the indigenous people and courtesy of Spanish descendants--from children to shopkeepers to executives.  The cultural offerings challenge any accomplishments in the performing and visual arts of which we are aware and the scenery, wildlife and consistently moderate climate make visiting here a true [...]

Part one of the series introduces the concept of federal overreaching jurisdiction in Alaska, the application of the federal ‘iron fist’ and how it is successfully clouding the potential, bright future of Alaska (and [...]

Graham Smith (NGP Photo) of the Alaska State Pipeline Coordinators Office Reports TODAY that the agency's Annual Report Is Now Available.  Smith says that, "The State Pipeline Coordinator’s Office is the lead state agency for processing pipeline right-of-way leases, and it coordinates oversight of state-regulated pipelines." He adds that the annual report provides, "general information for each common carrier pipeline, highlights lessee reported activities, summarizes specific state oversight activities for pipeline construction, operation, and maintenance, and provides an outlook for the next fiscal year, including updates on several proposed natural gas pipeline projects." 10-26-12 – U.S. Congressman Doc Hastings Focuses On Alaska’s Energy Potential!

Note Canadian Energy Challenges Below Friday Alert and Comment:  U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (NGP Photo) has been one of the top two advocates in the entire United States Congress for adopting a reasonable national energy policy--in our studied opinion.  Since Alaska composes 3/4 of America's coastline, 20% of her total land mass and holds, arguably, the preponderance of America's potential oil, gas, coal and strategic metals reserves, his voice is as critical to Alaska as it is to the nation.  Here is a statement Chairman [...]

On Wednesday November 14, 2012, Paul Ziff (NGP Photo), CEO of Ziff Energy Group will be giving a presentation entitled "Natural Gas Under Siege” at the BMO Centre in Calgary, Alberta.  "Can natural gas production be competitive under the status quo?  The North American natural gas producing industry is “under siege”.  Natural gas prices have descended to a low not seen since the 1990’s and the current price is far below the full cycle cost to replace gas that is produced and sold."      FEDS Release Final Environmental [...]

Edmonton Journal by Michael Smyth.  As Premier  Christy Clark (EJ Photo-L) ramps up the rhetoric on the proposed Enbridge pipeline, it’s important to know exactly where she stands on the $6-billion megaproject.  ...  Consider Clark’s demand for a “fair share” of pipeline profits, an issue that’s triggered a nasty war of words with Alberta Premier Alison Redford (EJ Photo-R).  Redford is angry that Clark has suggested Alberta’s domestic oil royalties could possibly be shared with B.C. in return for this province’s support of the pipeline, which would connect Alberta’s oilsands to our coast.  No [...]

Commentary:  Yesterday we commented on elected officials who set policies that benefit the cravings of this generation's constituents at the expense of an economy that sustains future generations.  Representative Les Gara's (NGP Photo) ADN editorial today is a perfect example of this mindset: profiting from intergenerational theft.  On the national scene, we see the principle at work among those with the power to borrow money from China and Japan, thus incurring debt for tomorrow's generation to fund the greed of today's constituents.  This trend is deplorable and we shall have more [...]

Will Americans Elect Wiser, More Energy Savvy Officials In November?  Commentary by Dave Harbour Today's Wall Street Journal Editorial.  President Obama is campaigning as a champion of the oil and gas boom he's had nothing to do with, and even as his regulators try to stifle it. The latest example is the Interior Department's little-noticed August decision to close off from drilling nearly half of the 23.5 million acre National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska.  The area is called the National Petroleum Reserve because in 1976 Congress designated it as a [...]

10-8-12 Crouching Grouches Remembered!

Saskatchewan is growing up to be a big energy Province! Is the "Crouching Grouches" Spending Message of 2002 Still Timely? by Dave Harbour In 2002 oil was less than $17/barrel, about the same as it was priced in 1987 and Alaska Senator Fred Dyson (NGP Photo) was chairman of a legislative caucus calling itself the 'Crouching Tigers Grouches Caucus". The low price of oil was combining with the diminishing throughput trend we still have today to create more of an atmosphere of 'crisis' than of the more muted 'concern' we have [...]

10-5-12

This morning, House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (NGP Photo) commented on today's September jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  “When there are 23 million unemployed or underemployed Americans, it’s always welcome news to see people getting back to work. Unfortunately, staggeringly high unemployment rates have become all too common and there are still too many families struggling to make ends meet. Meanwhile, the Obama Administration has continued its assault on American job creators. Nowhere is this more evident than American energy production where government red tape [...]

9-10-12 Current Events Are Connected

Feds say Chukchi Approval is part of their, "...all-of-the-above energy strategy to expand safe and responsible domestic energy production. ...   Under the permit..., Shell will be allowed to begin certain preparatory activities in the Chukchi Sea that will increase overall safety."  BSEE inspectors will be present on the Noble Discoverer to provide continuous oversight and monitoring of all approved activities. BSEE safety experts have already conducted thorough and comprehensive inspections of the drillship and Shell’s response equipment.  (ADN Story Here). Many Current Events Are Connected In Ways That Affect Economies and Energy Investments In [...]

Bureaucrats Plan to Execute the Beringia Treaty This Month Without Senate Ratification As the Congress Ignores Another Erosion of Its Constitutional Responsibility   Commentary by Dave Harbour According to our reliable Wikipedia source, "A treaty is an express agreement under international law entered into by actors in international law, namely sovereign states and international organizations.  A treaty may also be known as an international  agreement, protocol, covenant, convention or exchange of letters, among other terms. Regardless of terminology, all of these forms of agreements are, under international law, equally considered treaties and the rules are the same."   Properly following the treaty process is [...]

8-30-12 Murkowski Lauds Feds For Shell Decision

U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski's (NGP Photo) office this morning  released the following comment regarding a decision by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) to allow Shell to conduct preparatory work in the Chukchi Sea this summer.  “Today’s decision is a positive step that will allow Shell to begin necessary preparatory work, while maintaining the highest environmental standards to ensure the protection of the Arctic,” Murkowski said. “While we would all like to see a discovery this summer, the most important thing is for Shell to continue to make progress and [...]

A Shameful Management of the Country's Resources   The Obama Administration is again considering use/misuse of the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve, designed to be used in a national emergency.  The average price per barrel paid for the SPR oil is less than $30.  Today's price hovers around $100.  (Could the real motivation be arbitrage?) At the same time, this month the Obama Administration announced the BLM plans to essentially lock up the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A) at the same time the USFWS hopes to recommend wilderness designations for the approved oil [...]
