Alaska Dispatch by Patti Epler.  The second half of the gubernatorial campaign game kicked off in earnest Tuesday when Republican Gov. Sean Parnell (NGP Photo-l) and Democrat challenger Ethan Berkowitz (NGP Photo) met up in Kenai at a debate hosted by the Kenai and Soldotna chambers of commerce.  Observers called it "heated."  And Parnell was quick to send out a press release touting his own performance. (Unlike other candidates, Parnell hardly ever speaks directly to the press and prefers to communicate through statements prepared by his staff.) "Governor Parnell takes Berkowitz to Task on Health Care Reform," it says, and proceeds to lump the Alaska Democrat in with other more famous Democrats — Barack Obama, Harry Reid and, of course, Nancy Pelosi — for supporting federal health reform.  The reform "will cost us billions, and it will cost us our future," Parnell says in the prepared statement.  He noted that Alaska, at his direction, is one of 20 states that has sued to invalidate the healthcare reform passed by Congress. And the governor also applauded himself for taking action against the federal government in other areas, including a slowdown in offshore drilling.  "When the time for talk is done, we take action," Parnell said in the release.Primarily, Berkowitz pointed out that if Parnell has done such a great job with business, why is Alaska ranked dead last for business among the 50 states. And if the governor is a proponent of oil and gas development, why is oil and gas production and oil jobs down.  "Alaska has the fifth highest corporate tax rate in the country and we are taxing oil and gas production out of business," Berkowitz said.  The Berkowitz press release goes on and on with quotes from business publications, other reports and himself, and touts his own plan where Alaskans could "own a piece of the pipeline" by diverting some of their Permanent Fund dividend into an escrow account. He ignores Parnell’s healthcare disparagement.
