The Northern Waters Task Force will hold its first hearing TODAY, Friday, October 1, in Anchorage. The task force was created this summer after House Concurrent Resolution 22 was signed into law by the governor.

The task force appointed Rep. Reggie Joule, D-Kotzebue, as Chair, and Sen. Bert Stedman, R-Sitka, as Vice Chair. The group will facilitate the creation of a joint federal and state entity to coordinate U.S. and Alaska interests that result from opening Arctic waters for transportation, national security, and resource development.

"This is an opportunity for the committee and the public to learn more about the Northern Waters and the changes that are occurring and how that is impacting the region and the state," Joule said.
