Mineweb by Dorothy Kosich.  Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell (NGP Photo) has signed legislation that allows up to $65 million in bonds to finance major upgrades in the Skagway Port, which expands the place from which Yukon mining ore can be shipped overseas.  House Bill 119 also expands the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority’s (AIDEA) ability to invest in roads….  Historically, Skagway has been the fastest route out of the Yukon. The Klondike Gold Rush put the port on the map more than a century ago.  The Port of Skagway is the northernmost, ice-free, deep water port in North America, serving as a year-round transportation hub between Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Asia, and Europe.  The Skagway Ore Terminal could emerge as an important facility in exporting ore from Capstone Copper’s Minto Mine and Alexco Resources’ Bellekeno silver-lead-zinc mine.  The port could also serve as a major facility during the construction of the Alaska Gas Pipe Line, the McKenzie Valley Gas Pipeline and the Alaska-Canada Rail Link.  Whitehorse, Yukon Mayor Bev Buckway told the CBC News, "It’s a great economic partnership between the state of Alaska and the Yukon." Skagway residents are hoping that making the port a main shipment facility for Yukon mineral ore will keep families in Skagway year-round.
