From our Mid-Atlantic Energy Analyst Friend: One of the best items we have read in recent times is linked below. It is a great history from Roman times of how monetary policy is really in place to serve the government, not the people We urge you to read it. We learned more from this presentation than any one item in a long time. https://mises.org/library/inflation-and-fall-roman-empire Finally, an update on the progress of the Aramco IPO, just since our note yesterday. 2-21-17 Alaska In Crisis, For All The World To See (i.e. including the credit rating agencies)

Northern Dynasty pushes back on report critical of Pebble prospect The owners of the Pebble mine project fired back Friday against claims from a New York stock investment firm that the prospect is not economically or politically viable… Alaskans, let's not slip into the tax cycle again We all agree the state of Alaska is facing a fiscal crisis that could bring down our economy if we don't act soon.  Alaskans won't buy taxes without more cuts As increasingly antsy Alaska legislators stare down a $3 billion budget hole [...]

2-18-17 Anchorage Business Group Opposes Oil Tax Increase

ANCHORAGE CHAMBER OPPOSES HB 111    ANCHORAGE, AK - The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce today announced opposition to House Bill 111, a bill aimed at altering production taxes on the oil and gas industry for the seventh time in 12 years. The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce is a strong advocate for a solution to the state’s ongoing fiscal crisis, which will need to involve reductions in government spending, a restructuring of the permanent fund, and possibly a new broad-based tax. The Anchorage Chamber has consistently advocated for a fair, [...]

2-16-17 Teamster Leader Sets Oil Tax Advocate Straight!

BREAKING NEWS, 2:40 EDT:  TRANS CANADA REFILES FOR KEYSTONE XL ROUTE Posted By RICK BOYLES FOR THE JUNEAU EMPIRE Keeping the oil industry healthy     An observation from educator/philosopher William James came to mind as I watched Robin Brena lecture the House Resources Committee a few days ago on his version of reality. “There’s nothing so absurd that if you repeat it often enough, people will believe it,” James wrote. Well, Brena repeated the words “fair share” 40 times during his two-hour, 71-slide presentation. In Brena’s mind, “fair share” [...]

2-14-17 Happy Valentine’s Day!

More Gas Pipe/LNG Entrigue We noted that YESTERDAY the Alaska governor sought to increase the statutory reach of the Department of Law's Attorney General, so that he (i.e. and various attorney friends of the Administration as well, we presume), could participate in tribunals presided over by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Here is the bill he submitted to the Legislature. Please review our Sunday night observation and consider that in testimony today before the Senate Finance Committee the President of the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC) said that he was aware [...]

2-13-17 Alberta’s Oil Patch Is Recovering

Alberta's oilpatch is on the upswing: Here's the proof.  Calgary Herald.  The welding inspector on contract to Calgary-based Pembina Pipeline ... Output in the oil and gas industry in November climbed 6.1 percent from ... Legislative indecision has extended and worsened Alaska's recession.  Alaska's recession is worse than it needed to be because the state didn't solve its fiscal gap last year.  Alaska Railroad to cut 49 positions, lay off 31.  In-state economics have combined with world market forces to push the Alaska Railroad to again cut its [...]

2-12-17 It’s Sunday night, the quiet before the storm

Greetings!    (Note: this was provided to our subscribers tonight via email alert.)   It's Sunday night, the quiet before the storm.   Tomorrow, the reality of Alaska's TWO critical issues will hit the fan harder than ever. First, comes a new LNG issue that changes everything...well, not everything; the project's still uneconomic.   We'll comment more on it next week.  We will also bet that tomorrow the governor, legislators, talking heads and mainstream and social media mavens will be gushing with opinions that are certain to accomplish at least one [...]

Oil tax bill causes dustup in Alaska House, No one was told to sit down and be quiet at the Alaska House on Wednesday, but rules of order were invoked and challenged during a dustup over the introduction of an oil tax credit bill. From Ak-Headlamp   A summit hosted by the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC) is scheduled for March 1 to March 6, in an attempt to entice commercial customers to support its $45 billion Alaska LNG project. The summit is expected to cost about $200,000, though the [...]

2-9-17 U.S. Congress Tries To Correct Obama Attack On State Land Use Control

To our Canadian & U.S. marketers Note from our Mid-Atlantic energy analyst guru: "...the market will not see a further meaningful increase in crude oil without some weakening of the dollar.   Also, natural gas will be hard pressed to move with conviction until the cost of capital (as indicated by the rate on the benchmark ten-year bond) rises." From our Southeast Alaska friend Denny DeWitt comes this letter requesting the Alaska Delegation to use the  Congressional Regulatory Review Act (CRA) to stop implementation of the new ROD for the Tongass Management [...]

2-8-17 The Oil Curse

The Oil Curse: Is It Real? by Dave Harbour Our critical thinking readers can review this book (below), decide, then apply their conclusions to the oil, gas and minerals policies of Alaska and Western Canada (i.e. for starters).   If I were a philosopher prince, a student of Socrates and Plato, I would have absolute power, absolute integrity, a heart of wisdom and charity; and, I would be a good manager of natural resources.   Realizing that both the production and price of resources is volatile, I would carefully husband and [...]
