11-1-16 The Truth About The So Called Peaceful North Dakota Pipeline Protesters

Dear Friends Despite being held hostage by protesters amid threats of violence - we didn't let their threats and intimidation stop us from practicing real journalism and finding out the truth about the Dakota Access Pipeline. You can watch our interview with a local farmer here. His neighbors have lost scores of cattle and horses and they have reported incidents of trespassing and intimidation. Those protesting the development of the pipeline claim to be peaceful but up close it is clear they are the very opposite when challenged [...]

10-27-16 Economist Roger Marks Fact Checks Lawyer’s “Fair Share” Cliché

Beware of False Oil Tax Prophets by Dave Harbour Roger Marks, Senior Oil & Gas Economist. Northern Gas Pipelines file photo by Dave Harbour (Scroll down to Ak-Headlamp report for Marks' reference.) Regarding our piece yesterday about one lawyer's advocacy for higher oil industry taxes, we provide (BELOW) Ak-headlamp's comment today. We would only add that the lawyer proposes a "fair share" oil tax policy without definition or rational. He simply opines an assumption that a "fair share" of oil wealth for the bureaucracy should be "one-third of gross"... not one-third [...]

10-25-16 Attorney Joins Lawyer/Governor Bill Walker In Advocating Oil Tax Increase. Fair Or Hypocritical?

Calling for a "fair share" could be -- and in Alaska usually is -- a sign of political hypocrisy This morning's Alaska Dispatch News features another clever Opinion-Editorial by an Alaska lawyer (i.e. for more, see Ak-Headlamp analysis, column right.) who has become one of the largest individual contributors to democrat tax & spend candidates for the Alaska state legislature this election cycle. Recently, in a Neil Cavuto interview, Las Vegas developer Steve Wynn provided an articulate response to the wealth distribution crowd (See video) using the term "fair share" to [...]

10-20-16 Kenai Citizen Laments Ak-LNG Slowdown

"Experience is a dear teacher...." B. Franklin/W. Shakespeare (See Alaska Public Media story, right column.) We would only point out that certain longtime advocates of strong state participation in an Alaska LNG project have experienced a personal reality lesson. The lesson is that oil and gas investment is risky. When government and citizens become involved in energy projects, they subject themselves to risk. This is why we have consistently counseled public officials to avoid equity investment in private projects. The private sector is ready, willing [...]

10-17-16 Alaska LNG: Among World’s Least Competitive

Click edit button to change this text. Andrew Browning. Northern Gas Pipeline file photo by Dave Harbour A panel of experts gave their views on the shifting supply-demand balance, which is bolstered by more takeaway capacity to Mexico and via newly opened terminals on the Gulf Coast. Four panelists, including one from Canada, expressed different views about what was unfolding, but all agreed that the supply-demand picture will be quite different by the end of next year, not to mention the next 10 years, during the [...]

10-14-16 We Lament The Passing of Former Premier Jim Prentice!

James Prentice. Northern Gas Pipelines file photo by Dave Harbour We lament the passing of a great Canadian leader: Former premier Jim Prentice, who, with three others, was killed in Kelowna-area plane crash, yesterday. When we chaired an Arctic Gas Symposium in Calgary, it was a pleasure to dust off our French and introduce Jim in both of his country's languages. We sat together over lunch discussing his desire to see an Arctic gas pipeline properly developed with minimal delay...and his love for hunting pheasants in the Dakotas. He seemed [...]

10-11-16 The New President Will Bring Alaska (and America) To Energy Based Prosperity Or Poverty

We'd love to see you tomorrow night in Anchorage! -dh Let's Keep Our Eyes On The Prize: One Presidential Candidate Will Support Reasonable Energy Policies That Build Prosperity And The Other Will Support Unreasonable, Impoverishing Energy Policies. Dear Readers: Respectfully. It's not whether we prefer the morals of one imperfect candidate over another. Both are flawed, as have been past presidents, as have been ourselves. One, in our opinion is more fatally flawed than the other, but setting that aside, we choose to focus on the prize. Since our [...]

10-10-16 Did Alaska’s Senators Jump The Gun Trashing Trump?

Our take on this headline: Alaska Sens. Sullivan and Murkowski call on Donald Trump to drop out of presidential race After the disgusting Trump "hot mike" comments from 11 years ago, we collected our thoughts and offered them to Tim Pawlenty last Saturday. Today, we wish we had similarly counselled Alaska's Senators to not, "jump the gun". After all the outrage and dust settles, the reality is that a Clinton administration would 1) put the nail in Alaska's natural resource coffin, and 2) coordinate with the liberal Canadian Prime Minister on [...]
